Fishing association “Anagennisi” in cooperation with local entities, under the slogan “Experience the lagoon along with its people”, hosts a substantial number of high school or university environmental groups, as well as coordinated groups of guests from Greece or abroad, at its fishing facilities.
Environmental and fishing tourism in Mesolonghi-Aitoliko lagoon is a form of alternative tourism that aims, via experiential and recreational activities, to familiarize the guest with the local natural, social and cultural environment that allows traditional fishing activities to develop, but also to accent the importance of the local fishing community to the development of the entire area.
These programs are referring to guests that don't want to be simple passers-by on their excursions and do not want to compromise with the role of the tourist to whom a superficial image of a place is enough. This kind of tourism is based on guests that believe that true and substantial environmental education is tied to leisure and true familiarization with the environment..
By these activities, our association introduces the guest with the true values of the lagoon and presents the less known aspects of living in this beautiful and unique area. The program includes tours to the wetland and observation of rare birds. The guests have the opportunity to understand the mechanism that creates the ecosystem and its operations and how it is tied to the mythology and the area's history.
Fishermen of the association accept guests to their facilities (called by the locals “ivary”) and present lagoon’s fish cycle of life, how the rare traditional botargo of Mesolonghi is made, how to fish with traditional fishing tools. The guests have the opportunity to be introduced to the traditional art of fishing by fishing with the fishermen.
The program concludes with lunch made by the fishermen at the traditional houses of the lagoon called “pelades”.
